COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Ethan Crabtree and Brandon Downs were voted by their teammates as Most Valuable Players for the Coldwater Cardinal boys basketball team during their team banquet Sunday night at Bill’s Grill House.
The two four-year starters finished their high school careers with several spots in the school record books. Downs is Coldwater’s career leader in three-point baskets with 125, and he is fifth on the career scoring list with 1,019. Crabtree is ninth in career points with 849 and is third in season field goal percentage, converting on 62% of his shots.
Other awards that were voted on by team members include:
- Most Improved Player: Joe Closson, Donte Work
- Best Defensive Player: Brandon Downs
- Leadership Award: Ethan Crabtree
- Scout Team/Bench Player: Steven Covell, Aaron May
- Hustle Award: Joe Closson, Steven Covell
- Dedication Award: Ethan Crabtree
- Most Sportsmanlike: Steven Covell
In addition to the previously announced Interstate 8 All-Conference honors for Crabtree and Downs and All-Conference Honorable Mention for Donte Work and Evan Sloan, six Cardinals were named Academic All-Conference: Joe Closson, Zach Coffing, Steven Covell, Trevor Hensinger, Elijah Sloan, and Evan Sloan.
Coldwater finished the 2021-22 season with an 18-4 record and shared the Interstate 8 title with Marshall.
