STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – A man from Fremont, Indiana lost his life late Tuesday night following a motorcycle crash on West Orland Road near Crooked Lake in Steuben County.
The Indiana State Police is currently investigating the crash that took the life of 28-year-old Tyler Channing Szapkiw.
According to a preliminary investiation by the State Police, Szapkiw was operating a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the area of the 2200 block of West Orland Road at about 9:30 p.m. at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road.
The motorcycle then ran off the road and struck a utility pole. The force of impact snapped the utility pole in half.
State Police say Szapkiw was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Arriving officers found him to be unconscious and suffering from a serious head injury.
Steuben County EMS personnel provided initial medical assistance. Szapkiw was later flown from the scene by Lutheran Air to a Fort Wayne hospital where he later succumbed to his fatal injuries.
The Angola Police Department, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Steuben Fire & EMS personnel, the Steuben County Highway Department, NIPSCO and Countryside Towing all assisted the State Police at the scene of the crash.
