COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal varsity baseball team opened up the Interstate 8 portion of their schedule with a doubleheader sweep against Harper Creek at Lowe Field, taking the opener 16-2 in 5 innings and winning the nightcap 7-3.
The Cardinals took advantage of Beaver miscues in the first game to score 11 runs in the first inning and 5 runs in the second. Winning pitcher Nate Tappenden allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits while striking out 6, and he helped his own cause with a 3-run home run to right-center field. Brock Thornton added a solo homer that went over the scoreboard in left field, while Logan Farmer added a double and a single.
Carter Bordner got the pitching victory in the second game, allowing 3 runs on five hits with no walks and 6 strikeouts in 4 innings of work. Joe Closson picked up a 3-inning save, allowing 1 hit and striking out 3. Thornton had a triple, while Tappenden and Brynden Massey each had a double and a single.
Coldwater improved to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the Interstate 8. With the cancellation of Saturday’s Pat Lowe Memorial Invitational due to forecasted cold weather, the next action for the Cardinals is scheduled for next Tuesday at Hastings.
