COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Commissioners decided during their work session on Thursday that the nearly $451,000 the county got from state marijuana taxes should be spent first on getting rid of the much maligned Tier Two pay scale for employees with the remaining funds going to the Sheriff’s Department for additional road patrol deputies.
Formal action on their decision is scheduled to take place during the Commissioner’s next regular meeting on Tuesday.
During his power point presentation, County Administrator Bud Norman said the State Department of Treasury has indicated yearly distributions will likely be less in the future.
Once the Tier Two pay scale is eliminated, the county is planning to move all employees to Tier One compensation in order to help recruit and retain staff members.
Commissioner Jon Houtz was in favor of that.
Besides the Sheriff’s Department, funding from the marijuana taxes has been requested from eight sources including the Prosecutors office for an additional assistant prosecutor, Emergency Management Service and Michigan State University Extension.
