COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners formally approved their decision on Tuesday to use the county’s nearly $451,000 in marijuana regulation fees to end the Tier 2 pay scale for employees and give whatever is left over to the Sheriff’s Department for at least one additional road deputy.
The Tier 2 pay scale has been much maligned in recent years after it was instituted following the Great Recession of 2008 and 2009.
It’s been seen as one of the main reasons why the county has been unable to recruit and retain employees.
The Commissioners asked various unions to give their approval to the end of the Tier 2 pay scale by July 1 so that all employees can go to the Tier 1 pay scale by August 1.
The Commissioners made their decision about what direction to go with the marijuana funds during their work session last Thursday after Administrator Bud Norman received funding requests from eight sources.
Among them were MSU Extension, Emergency Management and the Prosecutor’s office who asked for an additional assistant prosecutor.
