QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Quincy Village Manager Brittany Butler tried to explain to the Village Council Tuesday night why several snags have developed in recent weeks concerning the proposed annexation of nearly 40 acres of land into the village west of the industrial park.
The Village Council approved the annexation request as well as a request to de-annex a small piece of property during its March 15 meeting and voted to petition the Branch County Board of Commissioners on both items.
Butler said in her report for Tuesday’s Council meeting, “The public hearing notice was placed in the paper for three consecutive weeks for the commissioner’s meeting, this is what is required by the state. Notice to the township is not required, however, I have apologized numerous times to the township privately and publicly for not informing them, even though it is a boards civic responsibility to read public notices. The township fears that marijuana is going in there after the township zoning administrator stated incorrectly at a meeting. I have told the township board as well as the Commissioners that I do not know what is going in there, the owner of the property (Ian Bernard) would like to be annexed for future expansion of the industrial park.”
County Commissioner Tom Matthew raised several questions and concerns during the Commissioners work session on May 5 and asked for additional information.
The Quincy Township Board voted against the annexation during a special meeting on May 9.
The County Commissioners decided the following day to have public hearings on June 2 at 9:05 a.m. and on June 7 at 4:35 p.m. on the two requests.
In other business Tuesday night, the Village approved a $26,000 quote from Handy Excavating for the demolition of blighted homes at 54 and 48 West Chicago.
