COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council adopted an ordinance on Monday night on so called exhibition driving in the city.
The ordinance prohibits rapid acceleration, squealing, peeling or burning of the tires, fishtailing, racing or running of the engine at a excessive or unusual noise, unnecessary and excessive changing of lanes; and the emission of anything unreasonably loud or unnecessary from the engine or exhaust system of any motor vehicle.
Former Coldwater Swap Meet and Car Show chairman Dale Parshall spoke against what he thought was an unneeded ordinance.
Public Safety Director Joe Scheid told Council Member Emily Rissman the ordinance would give officers more opportunities to issue a lesser ticket than one for reckless or careless driving.
The ordinance was put together after authorities got complaints from all over the city especially from those who live near parks. It goes into effect on June 13 and amends the Uniform Traffic Code to provide for a civil infraction for exhibition driving.
