LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A Republican candidate in the newly created 5th Congressional District is one of 18 candidates who could be thrown off the August Primary ballot because she did not have enough valid petition signatures.
MLive reports the Michigan Bureau of Elections determined that Elizabeth Ferszt of Jackson had 868 of the 1,000 valid signatures needed to get on the ballot with 477 invalid signatures.
She is one of two Republicans who are challenging incumbent Congressman Tim Walberg.
Sherry O’Donnell of Stevensville has also been challenging Walberg.
With Michigan losing a seat in Congress, the newly drawn 5th district covers Michigan’s border counties with Indiana and Ohio as well as Jackson County and portions of Calhoun and Kalamazoo Counties.
Whoever wins the August primary will face Democrat Bart Goldberg of New Buffalo. He is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.
The Board of State Canvassers will make the final decision on the Bureau of Elections recommendations when they meet on Thursday.
