HILLSDALE, MI (WTVB) – The Hillsdale County Sheriffs Department says they have been informed by the Asset Protection Staff at the Hillsdale Walmart store that there has been an increased number of senior citizens coming into the store to purchase Google, Stream, and/or Walmart gift cards.
They purchase gift cards for thousands of dollars after receiving phone calls or emails directing them to do so.
The Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that the people on the other end use scare tactics to convince individuals to buy these cards.
Once the cards are purchased, the scammers ask for the numbers on the backs of the cards to be read to them over the phone.
Government Agencies, Businesses, Banks, and/or Companies will never take a gift card as a form of payment for anything.
The people scamming may ask you go to a store other than Walmart.
The Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office is advising citizen to never give personal information out and that you should always be cautious of individuals calling or emailing looking for information.
