COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Thousands in Michigan remain without power this morning, after several waves of thunderstorms and strong winds roared through the state last night and early this morning.
As of early morning, Consumers Energy listed 1,387 customers in Branch County without power. Some of the restoration times were estimated to be by mid-morning, while one pocket of 75 customers near Union City was estimated to see power restored until mid-afternoon today.
The first thunderstorm moved through Branch County around 8:30 p.m. Monday, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Warning from the National Weather Service. That’s when most of the power was knocked out, with a dramatic video showing what’s believed to be a transformer exploding and catching fire off Michigan Avenue south of the Coldwater city limits.
Another line of thunderstorms passed through Branch County shortly after 1:00 a.m. this morning.
As of 4:30 a.m., there were 1,146 Consumers Energy customers without power in Calhoun County, 1,248 in Hillsdale County, 1,664 in St. Joseph County, and 4,921 in Jackson County. The utility had staged extra crews around the area ahead of the storm to get a jump on any of the restoration efforts.
