LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A Michigan House bill could require districts like the Coldwater Community Schools to pay student teachers for their classroom work.
The bill passed this week would provide student teachers with a $90 per day stipend.
Under the proposal, teachers with experience who help guide them would also receive $1,000.
Right now, student teaching is required to earn your in-state teaching certificate, but most districts like Coldwater don’t pay students teachers.
Lawmakers proposing the bill say that can make it harder to attract new teachers, with the state is currently dealing with a shortage. The bill also hopes to draw more teachers to the state.
It now heads to the state Senate after receiving overwhelming approval in the House.
