JONESVILLE, MI (WTVB) – One of the charter members of the Big 8 Conference will be leaving in a year.
The Jonesville School Board voted unanimously on Monday night to move from the Big 8 Conference to the Cascades Conference beginning with the 2023-2024 school year.
Jonesville superintendent Erik Weatherwax said, “This was not a decision that was taken lightly given our history with the Big 8 and the tradition that goes along with it. However, the move to the Cascades Conference provides more athletic opportunities for our students and that’s what we had to stay focused on.”
According to a post on the Jonesville Schools Facebook page, the move will allow the bowling team a shot at winning a league championship and will provide the football team with a chance to earn points to be eligible for the postseason. While the average distance to a Cascades Conference school was more than to a Big 8 school, it was felt the benefits outweigh the distance.
Jonesville was an original member of the Little “C” Conference when it was formed in 1931. They were later part of the Big 8 Conference when it formed in 1973.
There have been reports that Homer is also considering a move from the Big 8 to the Cascades Conference.
