BURR OAK TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Burr Oak Township Clerk has been told by the Michigan Bureau of Elections to not administer elections until further notice due to the alleged improper mailing of absentee ballots.
The Commercial-News in Three Rivers is reporting Township Clerk Jackie Wells got a three page letter from Michigan Bureau of Elections Director Jonathan Brater following alleged “serious violations” of Michigan election law ahead of Tuesday’s primary election.
The letter dated on Tuesday that was obtained by the Commercial-News said the Bureau received reports that Wells allegedly issued absentee voter ballots rather than absentee voter ballot applications to voters on the township’s permanent absentee voter application list.
WOOD-TV reports between 50 and 100 voters were affected by the clerk’s alleged actions.
The St. Joseph County Clerk’s office administered the election in place of Wells on Tuesday after the Secretary of State’s office took away her election responsibilities.
