COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Butler Township man was arraigned on seven counts Thursday in Branch County District Court following a Michigan State Police investigation into alleged child sex crimes that date back four years.
59-year-old Charles Dee Odette has been charged with four counts of being in aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material as well as a count of using a computer to commit a crime.
As they were investigating a complaint of criminal sexual conduct against Odette, State Police got a search warrant after they were told he allegedly possessed child sexually abusive materials on his computers.
According to Branch County court documents, State Police discovered thousands if not tens of thousands of child sexually abusive materials during their search.
Odette is also facing two counts of second degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with alleged incidents involving two young girls during 2018 and 2019.
In addition, documents state Odette was previously convicted in Calhoun County for first degree criminal sexual conduct in 1992.
Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf during Thursday’s arraignment and bond was set at $200,000.
If he posts bond, Odette is not to have contact with the two alleged victims or anyone under the age of 18.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled for August 23 with a preliminary exam on August 30.
