UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – In what could be the last football game between Jonesville and Union City for a while, the Chargers got a late touchdown to defeat the Comets 6-0 Friday night at Alumni Field.
Riley Laird’s punt return of nearly 40 yards put the Chargers at the Jonesville 14. Two plays later, Laird scampered 14 yards to pay dirt with 1:27 left to snap the scoreless tie.
Laird unofficially ran for 64 yards while Landyn Crance had 49 yards rushing. The Chargers defense allowed less than 100 yards of total offense by Jonesville.
Union City had to overcome three first half fumbles and 90 yards in penalties as they improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big 8. Jonesville is now winless in three games and 0-2 in the conference.
Elsewhere in the Big 8, Reading won the Battle of the Bell for the fifth consecutive year with a 38-6 win at Quincy. The only score for the Orioles came on a 75-yard fumble return in the second quarter. Tre’Von Bodley had 13 carries for 59 yards, while Brennen Allman was 8-for 18 passing for 128 yards and an interception, and Ethan Copas led the receiving corps with 3 catches for 41 yards. Quincy dropped to 0-3 overall, 0-2 in the Big 8.
Bronson dropped to 2-1 with a 48-20 non-conference loss to Michigan Center at Charles Hilton Field. And Homer picked up a 42-6 home win against Springport.
In 8-player football, Tekonsha improved to 2-1 with a 52-28 home win against Battle Creek St. Philip.
