COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman presented a first draft of the county’s 2023 general fund budget on Thursday during the County Board of Commissioners work session and it showed a deficit of $3.4 million.
Norman said a first draft deficit of between three and four million dollars is normal.
The proposed budget is based on departmental budget hearings conducted between August 25 and Wednesday.
Norman said the county is facing several revenue challenges.
Expense challenges included equipment and maintenance costs along with the elimination of the Tier Two pay scale.
Norman said negotiations with unions representing county employees will start sooner than in previous years.
Norman said this years deficit is about $300,000 more than when the first draft was presented last year.
The first draft was the first of several drafts presented to Commissioners before they are scheduled to adopt the budget in December.
