DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Jackson Lumen Christi will be leaving the Interstate 8 Conference to join the Catholic High School League beginning with the 2023-2024 school year.
The C.H.S.L.’s executive athletic board made the official announcement on Thursday.
The decision follows months of discussion between the nation’s largest Catholic sports league and Lumen Christi.
The school signaled its interest in a letter to the CHSL formally requesting membership, and the request subsequently was approved by the board of the CHSL.
Beginning in the fall of 2023, student athletes at Lumen Christi will be eligible to compete in CHSL championships in all 30 sports overseen by the league.
For the past eight years, Lumen Christi has played against seven larger public schools in the Interstate-8 Athletic Conference.
Lumen Christi Athletic Director Jesse Brown said, “Lumen Christi is very excited to join the CHSL. The alignment of faith, academics and athletics is going to allow our student athletes and community to grow in all aspects.”
The Catholic High School League was founded in 1926 and is the largest Catholic sports league in the U.S. with 27 private high schools located throughout southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio.
The addition of Lumen Christi will bring that total to 33 school communities for the next school year.
