COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater announced on Friday it will receive a $20,000 grant for creating downtown public restrooms thanks to a Capital Improvement grant program offered by the Michigan Arts & Culture Council.
According to a press release, the construction of new public restrooms in an alley that connects South Monroe Street to Tibbits Plaza has been a priority of the city.
The restrooms will include two unisex stalls, be accessible, and include infant changing stations for parents and caretakers.
The City also plans to create formal ramps that connect to the adjacent sidewalks and streets on either end of the alley.
City Manager Keith Baker says, “The City is thankful for the additional funding to assist in bringing this project to fruition. We look forward to improving the quality of our events and visitor experience by having restrooms available to the public. We plan to unveil them in time for Apple Fest next year.”
The grant awarded to the city is part of a competitive program for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and municipalities that provides funding assistance for expanding, renovating, or constructing arts and cultural facilities.
The program also assists with upgrades of equipment and furnishings.
The downtown restroom project’s total cost was almost $200,000 but the City Council decided to delay the project by one year to provide City staff a chance to apply for grant funds.
Following the grant guidelines, new public restrooms will be constructed and ready for use no later than September 30, 2023.
