COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Butler Township man was ordered to serve up to 22 1/2 years in prison on Monday morning in Branch County Circuit Court after entering no contest pleas to charges of being in aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material and second degree criminal sexual conduct.
59-year-old Charles Dee Odette was originally charged with seven counts following a Michigan State Police investigation into child sex crimes that dated back four years.
Odette was given a sentence of five to 10 years on the aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material charge and a concurrent sentence of five to 22 1/2 years on the second degree criminal sexual conduct count.
Odette must register and comply with the Michigan Sex Offenders Registration Act.
He was credited with 46 days already served in jail.
Five other charges were dismissed by prosecutor in exchange for the pleas.
Part of the plea agreement called for Odette, who is in poor health, to get a prison sentence of at least five years.
Court documents say the State Police discovered thousands if not tens of thousands of child sexually abusive materials during a search of Odette’s home. The CSC charges were filed in connection with incidents involving two young girls during 2018 and 2019.
In addition, documents state Odette was previously convicted in Calhoun County for first degree criminal sexual conduct in 1992.
