JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – An Angola woman was critically injured Thursday morning when she was struck by a vehicle on State Road 120 west of Fremont.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says deputies responded just before 6:50 a.m. and found a vehicle parked on the side of the road which was driven by 27-year-old Kaylee Phibbs of Bronson.
Phibbs told deputies she believed her eastbound 2012 Chevy Traverse struck a deer that was in the travel portion of the road.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle struck a female pedestrian who appeared to be the subject of an earlier 911 call which indicated a woman was walking west in the middle of the road screaming and waving at oncoming traffic.
The initial crash investigation indicated that 28-year-old Sabrina V. Furar was struck as she was standing in the travel portion of the road.
The Sheriff’s Department reports Furar was wearing dark clothing and that the area of State Road 120 was not lighted.
Furar was taken to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital by Steuben County EMS.
She was then flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne by the Samaritan Helicopter in critical condition with head and possible internal injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office stated it’s unclear at this time why Furar was walking in the middle of the road at the time of the crash.
The incident still remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
Assisting at the scene were police from Angola and Fremont, Fremont Fire Rescue and Steuben County EMS.
