COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Police Department has received accreditation from the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.
Representatives were at Monday’s City Council meeting to present the department with its accreditation certificate.
Bob Stevenson is the Association’s Executive Director.
Public Safety Director Joe Scheid said the accreditation was something he wanted to accomplish when he was appointed as Director in 2019.
Scheid said in his memo to the Council that the accreditation process was a long and arduous journey.
He added, “In our case we threw away the old policy manual and started from scratch, writing policies that follow industry best practices and comply with the 108 accreditation standards. As part of the process, we benchmarked our policies against a number of other municipalities throughout the State of Michigan. This process has fundamentally changed our agency, in both what we do and how we do it.”
Two accreditation assessors from the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission came to Coldwater to inspect the department and operations in early August.
A report on their findings can be found on line at www.coldwater.org as part of Monday night’s Coldwater City Council packet.
