BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Firefighters from four departments had to be called in to battle what was described as a large field fire on Tuesday afternoon in the area of West Colon and Wheeler Roads in Batavia Township.
Bronson firefighters were initially dispatched at 2:35 p.m..
They later got assistance from the Coldwater, Sherwood Township and Union City fire departments.
Life Care Ambulance was called up on standby and the Branch County Sheriff’s Department provided traffic control.
The National Weather Service said there was an elevated risk for field fires on Tuesday due to warm weather and dry conditions.
Winds gusted up to near 30 miles an hour at the Branch County Memorial Airport on Tuesday and relative humidity levels dropped to between 30 and 40 percent.
Conditions have also been dry recently.
The Michigan State University Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Diary Farm has only measured a quarter of an inch of rain over the last two weeks.
