COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Bronson man was placed on probation for five years and was given a 90 day suspended jail sentence on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court after he entered a no contest plea to being in possession of child sexually abusive material.
Another felony charge against 33-year-old Rex Allen Otis III for using a computer to commit a crime was dismissed by prosecutors in exchange for his plea.
Otis was also ordered to register with the State of Michigan as a sex offender.
As part of his probation, he can not possess alcohol or drugs and has to stay out of bars.
Otis was given credit for two days already served in the county jail.
Otis was arrested in March of 2021 following an investigation by the Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
State Police say the investigation was initiated by the Fifth District Computer Crimes Unit in Coldwater when a suspect was found to be downloading a large amount of child sexually abusive material. A search warrant was conducted at Otis’ residence and troopers say digital evidence was seized.
An interview was conducted at the scene. An arrest warrant was issued for Otis and he was subsequently arrested.
