COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Public Safety Department along with the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities are partnering with Michigan Gas Utilities to help you stop utility scams.
The utility says the scammers may call you and pretend to be from MGU. They may even manipulate caller ID to display “MGU” or use a recording that sounds like it’s from the company.
They would then threaten to turn off your natural gas in a short amount of time if you don’t make an immediate payment often with a prepaid debit card, third-party digital payment app like Zelle or an unusual payment method such as bitcoin.
If someone comes to your door claiming to be from MGU, ask for identification.
Remember, Utility Companies will never threaten or try to scare you, disconnect you on short notice or demand payment by third-party apps
When in doubt, hang up, and call the CBPU at (517) 279-9531 or Michigan Gas Utilities at 800-401-6402.
