COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Quincy man was ordered to serve between two and 15 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court for his part in a home invasion just over a year ago on Sebring Road.
39-year-old Daniel Joseph Earl entered a no contest plea to an amended second degree home invasion count. A first degree count was dismissed by prosecutors in exchange for Earl’s plea.
Also dismissed was a separate case involving three counts of assaulting/restricting or obstructing a police officer.
Earl was given credit for 370 days already served in jail. He was arrested by the Branch County Sheriffs Department after an investigation into the November 2021 break-in.
According to Branch County court documents, Earl was accused of being armed with a hatchet during the break in.
Documents also said the homeowner discovered the break in when he arrived home. After he saw a man in his living room with a hatchet in his hand, the homeowner got a handgun from his truck and held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.
The suspect said he picked up the hatchet because he thought he might need it after the homeowner pointed a gun at him.
Several rounds of ammunition were also found in the suspect’s sweatshirt according to the Sheriff’s Department. The homeowner reported at the time that two weapons were missing.
