HILLSDALE, MI (WTVB) – The Hillsdale County Veteran’s Coalition has developed an Emergency Management Workgroup to explore issues of care navigation and transportation between the VA and Hillsdale Hospital and find strategies to diminish the barriers.
A critical community need was identified when the Hillsdale Police Department reached out to then coalition leader, Corey Murray, to assist with serving a Veteran in crisis.
During the interaction, it was clear there was a gap in the process and resources needed to link Veterans with VA Healthcare.
Hillsdale County Veterans Coalition Co-Chair Randy Evans says, “This project demonstrates the positive change that can be achieved when a coalition of individuals and entities come together with a common goal, of better serving our county’s Service Members, Veterans, and Families.”
The coalition brought together leadership from Hillsdale Hospital Emergency Department, LifeWays Crisis Team, and Ann Arbor VA to work together to improve access to VA care for Veterans.
A standard operating procedure has been jointly developed, which went into effect November 16, 2022, allowing Hillsdale Hospital to more seamlessly transfer Veterans to VA Care for medical and psychiatric treatment.
