COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Board of Public Utilities President Paul Jakubczak told the B.P.U.’s Board of Directors on Tuesday night that Michigan South Central Power Agency’s Project 5 was D.O.A..
Coldwater is one of four communities that make up the M.S.C.P.A..
Project 5 would have included a 50 megawatt natural gas fired plant in Coldwater. Coldwater would have gotten the majority of the 50 megawatts with smaller portions being divided up with Hillsdale, Clinton and Marshall.
But Jakubczak said supply chain issues have caused project costs to go up 35 percent between June of 2021 and November of 2022. The commercial operation date has also been pushed to either 2025 or 2026 which according to Jakubczak hurts the utility in the capacity market.
With all that in mind, Jakubczak said the Michigan South Central Power Agency Board decided last week to discontinue moving forward with Project 5.
There were other financial issues during negotiations on an interconnection agreement with ITC.
As for alternatives….
He added they will continue to pursue renewable energy.
Jakubczak estimated just under $300,000 has been invested in Project 5 which has been put into engineering costs.
