COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Leonard Kolcz wrapped up his six years on the Branch County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday with a warning to future Commissioners to hire more road patrol deputies for the Branch County Sheriff’s Department.
He said when he ran in 2016 he wanted to see a new jail millage get passed and to beef up the Sheriff’s Department.
Kolcz criticized the decision made almost a decade ago to cut the Sheriff’s Department budget in half.
After having a conversation with a C.P.S. worker in St. Joseph County, Kolcz said not having a 24 hour Sheriff’s Department leaves Branch County in a vulnerable legal position.
Kolcz did not run for re-election this year after his district was divided. The new boundaries meant Kolcz would have had to run in the August G.O.P. Primary against fellow Commissioner Tim Stoll and Kolcz did not want to do that.
