SALINE, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal varsity gymnastics team traveled to Saline on Tuesday for a conference match up. The Cardinals came up short against the Hornets by a margin of 125.8 to 131.375.
In spite of the loss, the Cardinals came up big with their third straight team qualifying score. The gymnasts need just one more to earn their right to compete in the postseason at the MHSAA Regional.
Coldwater’s Charlotte Calhoun put together a dominating performance, besting the competition by almost two full points by the final tally in the competition.
Her stellar performance earned the junior two personal best scores and all four qualifiers along the way.
She and teammates Randi Dudek and Kiraly Schoenauer will officially compete in the postseason having collected the necessary Regional scores in multiple events.
Calhoun collected a 9.0 on the uneven bars to earn a personal best score on the event and a first place finish. Dudek claimed second with a score of 8.375 points. Schoenauer fourth with a score of 8.1.
All three Cardinals earned their fourth and final qualifying scores on the event in four straight competitions. The trio will perform their uneven bars skills at the MHSAA Regional in March.
Once again the veteran gymnasts of Calhoun, Dudek, and Schoenauer each earned qualifying scores on the vault. Calhoun and Dudek went back to back scoring 8.35 points (4th) and 8.325 points (5th) respectively. Schoenauer posted a solid 8.0 for her efforts.
Calhoun led the way with 8.775 points in floor exercise for a second place finish. Schoenauer was next in line with a score of 8.45. Dudek earned 8.3 for her efforts. Once again, all three Cardinal gymnasts will be competing in the postseason as each of them earned their final qualifier in their first four outings. Freshman Sofia Gruner collected her third individual qualifier at 7.95 points and hopes to be joining her teammates in the postseason.
The highlight of the evening came when Calhoun posted a personal best mark of 9.325 points for a nearly flawless routine on the balance beam. It was the exclamation point on an epic meet for the junior, who earned all four qualifying scores on all four events in her first four outings.
In the all-around competition, Calhoun earned a personal record of 35.45 points to finish first. Dudek tallied 32.2 points overall, followed by Schoenauer with 31.075 points. Sofia Gruner earned a solid 26.675, and Teagan Rabideau posted 22.65 overall.
