COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council gave the go ahead Monday night on a revised design for a permanent downtown public restroom building. The construction of new public restrooms in an alley that connects South Monroe Street to Tibbits Plaza has been a priority of the city. Mayor Tom Kramer and City Manager Keith Baker said the restroom will not be open year round.
The City Council in March of 2022 decided to push the restroom project back for at least a year in order to pursue a grant due in part to labor shortages and the high cost of building materials. Kramer pointed out the project was helped by a $20,000 grant awarded by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.
The project’s only bidder Brussee/Brady of Three Rivers and architect Scott Morrison developed a revised bid based on a more simplified design.
The revised bid submitted by Brussee/Brady Inc. was $171,900 which is down from the original bid of $182,5000. In addition to the construction of the restroom building, the City will perform about $15,000 in utility work to connect the building to the City’s system. The original bid did not include the utility work. The Council on Monday accepted the M.A.C.C. grant and awarded the construction contract to Brussee/Brady.
