MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – Marshall High School and neighboring Walters Elementary School had to be placed on a lock down Friday morning after there was a report of “shots fired” near the high school.
Marshall Police say they responded at about 7:18 a.m. to the report just as students were arriving for school. Marshall Officers were on scene at the time of the dispatch but did not hear the reported gunshots.
As a precaution the school was placed on lockdown. All students not already in the building were diverted to secure locations.
Marshall Police officers along with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police proceeded to search the area and buildings.
The lockdowns were lifted at about 10:00 a.m.. Even though the report was unfounded, both Walters Elementary and Marshall High School closed for the rest of the day.
Some parents expressed their unhappiness on social media about what they thought was a lack of communication from Marshall school officials especially with wind chills well below zero on Friday morning.
Marshall Police continue to investigate. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, call the Marshall Police Department at (269) 781-0911 or Silent Observer at (269) 964-3888.
