A gathering of family and friends including a Celebration of Life will take place from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2023 at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation, 1276 Tate Trail in Union City. Private interment will be at Lester Cemetery in Algansee Township.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2023 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Coldwater, with Rev. Fr. Dan Hyman as the celebrant.
Mary was born February 21, 1934 in Coldwater, Michigan to Frank and Elizabeth (Smetka) Tomecek. After graduating from Quincy High School class of 1952, Mary married John Kasperski on August 13, 1953 at St. Charles Catholic Church. The couple celebrated 69 years of marriage last year.
Mary worked at Shaw Shoe in Coldwater right out of high school until the company closed its doors in 1982. John and Mary opened a shoe repair shop, J & M Shoe Service in downtown Coldwater in 1983. She also worked for her son’s business, Extermital Termite & Pest Control.
Mary enjoyed her garden, baking, feeding the birds, and cared for countless stray cats throughout her life. She was a family-oriented person who loved being wherever her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were.
You could always find John and Mary at the baseball fields, in the high school gyms, on the sidelines of the soccer fields, or walking the course of cross country meets or golf matches. Mary found pure joy and delight in cheering on the teams and always congratulating them afterward with the well-known candy bag. This bag of goodies coined her as “the candy lady” by many student athletes over the years.
Survivors include Mary’s husband, John; her children, Steve (Vicki) Kasperski of Coldwater and Judy (Christopher Kidder) Vaccaro of Union City; grandchildren, Jennifer (Michael) Clark, Angela (Caleb) Garn, Michael (Heather) Kasperski, Nathan Vaccaro and Matthew Vaccaro; great-grandchildren, Samuel, Liam and Zayna Clark, Deacon and Josie Garn and Bailey and Jaxson “JJ” Kasperski; many nieces, nephews and Godchildren; best friend, Nellie Cronk; and “Little Sis”, Carolyn Morrison.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial donations are suggested to Animal Aid of Branch County or The Angel Program at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School.
