COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Two 23-year-old men from South Bend, Indiana were formally charged during a video arraignment on Monday following a Sunday afternoon high speed pursuit that started at U.S. 12 and Markay Drive and ended when the vehicle they were in crashed into a building in downtown Bronson.
The driver, Luis Trevinio, was charged with resisting and obstructing, fleeing a police officer and driving while his license was suspended.
A passenger, Cruz Angel Pedraza, was charged with resisting and obstructing and fleeing a police office.
Bond for both men was set at $5,000 during their video arraignment.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department reports they stopped a 2017 Dodge Charger with an expired or improper license.
The vehicle then accelerated and a pursuit ensued heading west on U.S. 12. The Sheriff’s Department said in a news release the suspect vehicle reached speeds over 120 MPH as it entered the City of Bronson.
The suspect vehicle eventually failed to navigate a left turn onto South Matteson Street from U.S. 12 and lost control. It struck the main utility pole and snapped it in half before striking the building at 103 West Chicago Street which houses a photography studio.
Both the driver and passenger tried to make a run for it but were taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Sunday the suspects were also booked at the Branch County Jail for alleged possession of drugs but no formal drug charges have been filed yet by Prosecutors.
The Sheriff’s Department received assistance from Bronson Police, the Bronson Fire Department and Consumers Energy.
