ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says a county resident was targeted as a victim of fraud recently which cost her $8,000.
He says someone phoned the resident and identified themselves as their grandson, who had been arrested for a traffic offense and was in need of money to bail them out of jail.
The so-called grandson was accompanied by a woman who identified themselves on the phone as a lawyer out of New York who was representing her grandson in Michigan City, Indiana.
They said they needed $8,000 in cash for the grandson to be released from jail on bail.
The victim was instructed to call once she returned home with the money from the bank.
When she called, the woman was told a bail bondsman would come to her home and pick up the money.
Within five minutes, a man arrived in a 1990’s or 2000’s grey and brown Toyota Camry to retrieve the money.
After exchanging the money, the man left in a hurry. He is described as a well-dressed white male in his 30s who is about six feet tall with a thin build and a well-trimmed beard.
The victim’s grandson was contacted and stated he was never arrested and has no involvement in this incident.
