BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Consumer’s Energy issued a statement on Sunday morning which said restoration work will be completed on Monday as over 600 Consumers Energy crews, contractors and lineworkers from outside Michigan were starting what the utility called their final push to restore power.
The devastating ice storm which coated south central Michigan with at least a half inch of ice on Wednesday afternoon and evening resulted in more than 8,000 downed wires and more than 237,000 Consumer’s Energy outages.
As of midday Sunday, almost 3,300 Branch County customers were still without power out of the nearly 6,600 who initially lost electricity.
Hillsdale County was among the hardest hits areas as almost 91 percent of customers for Consumer’s Energy lost power. Over 12,000 or about 65 percent of Consumer’s customers were still in the dark at midday on Sunday.
At the same time, there were over 3,300 outages in Calhoun County.
Norm Kapala, one of Consumers Energy’s officers in charge for the event, said on Sunday, “Our crews have made strong progress this weekend and are committed to working around the clock to get the job done. We’re grateful to people in the communities we serve for their patience and understanding these last few days, and we look forward to getting the lights back on for every single customer.”
Consumers Energy thanked customers with a free hot breakfast at the American Legion Post #360 in Reading and a free lunch at the Walmart Supercenter in Jonesville.
About 2,000 lineworkers from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia are continuing to restore power across southern Michigan communities.
