BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – In anticipation of a major winter storm that was expected to move in at midday on Friday, some Branch County school districts decided to cancel classes for the day.
Forecasts called for between eight and 12 inches of snow to move in during the lunch hour and that driving conditions were expected to worsen Friday afternoon.
That led officials in the Coldwater, Bronson and Quincy districts to decide not to take a chance of having their buses on the road as the heavy, wet snow was kicking in.
The Branch I.S.D., Pansophia Academy along with St. Charles Borremeo Catholic School in Coldwater and St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic School in Bronson also decided to close on Friday.
Branch County was included in a Winter Storm Warning that started at 12 noon.
Union City Community Schools decided to stay open as the Winter Storm Warning for Calhoun County was not scheduled to start until 2:00 p.m..
The winter had been quiet up until the middle of February with few interruptions for weather but local school officials have been forced to use a number of snow days in recent weeks.
No word yet on if any of the days missed will be made up.
