BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Old Man Winter continues to make up for lost time. What had been a quiet and tranquil winter has turned mean and nasty over the last couple of weeks.
A winter storm that featured almost a half foot of heavy, wet snow has left thousands of Consumer’s Energy customers in the dark but the numbers are not as high when compared to the February 22 ice storm.
As of 6:00 a.m. Saturday, nearly 2,300 customers in Branch County were without power including nearly 1,600 in the Kinderhook area.
There were almost 1,900 outages in Hillsdale County, about 100 in Calhoun County and over 700 in St. Joseph County.
Consumer’s Energy reports over 18,000 customers were out system wide.
Reports throughout the area indicate six to seven inches of snow fell from the system that moved in early Friday afternoon.
Driving was treacherous to say the least especially early Friday night when winds gusted as high as 35 miles an hour which caused reduced visibility.
Between 3:00 p.m. and midnight, Branch County Central Dispatch had to handle about 30 calls for crashes or slide offs.
