LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Data released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology Management and Budget showed Branch County’s unemployment rate went up almost a full percent in January.
After being at three-point-seven percent in November and at four percent in December, statistics showed the jobless rate went up to 4-point-9 percent. Unemployment rates usually go up in January following the holiday season.
The report stated not seasonally adjusted jobless rates rose in all 17 Michigan labor market areas over the month.
Associate Director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives Wayne Rourke said in a statement released by the DTMB, “Michigan’s regional labor markets experienced typical increases in unemployment rates in January. Payroll job totals also fell seasonally in all Michigan metro areas over the month.”
Labor force levels increased in 15 regions over the month while 16 Michigan labor market areas exhibited labor force advances over the year. The report showed Branch County tied for the 14th lowest unemployment rate among Michigan’s 83 counties.
Unemployment rates went up in neighboring counties. It was five-point-nine percent in St.Joseph County, five percent in Hillsdale County and five-point-one percent in Calhoun County.
Michigan’s January unemployment rate held steady at four-point-three percent. Unemployment rates in January ranged from three-point-four percent in Oakland and Livingston County to 21-point-two percent in Mackinac County.
