GIRARD TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A bridge in northern Branch County that had to have it weights lowered in November of 2020 is one of two bridges in the county that are scheduled to be replaced this year.
The Marshall Road bridge over Hog Creek was built in 1968 and was originally scheduled to be replaced last year but Road Commission Manager Jay Miller told the Branch County Road Commission during their March 9 board meeting that work on replacing the bridge is scheduled to start in June.
He said pre-construction meetings have been held on both the Marshall Road and Clay Road bridge replacement projects.
Miller said right of way tree clearance had started on Clay Road in Union Township and the project should tentatively take three months to complete.
A inspection in November 2020 by Great Lakes Underwater Services revealed enough problems with the Marshall Road bridge north of Girard to force weight limits for trucks and other large vehicles to be lowered from 50 tons to 14 tons.
Miller said at the time that Hog Creek’s low water level revealed problems with the bridge’s steel pilings.
After the weight limit was lowered, message boards were put up which told truckers to stay on the interstate.
