COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Representatives from Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility are expected to ask the Branch County Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday morning for a $250,000 advance.
The request is expected to be made during an update from Maple Lawn on their financial status.
Maple Lawn is still in the process of paying back the State of Michigan $874,000 after they got a notice of a Medicade Interim Payment adjustment last June.
Commissioners first learned last August that Maple Lawn was dealing with some financial issues.
A millage request was placed on the November 2022 ballot after Maple Lawn officials claimed they had to deal with drastic increases in costs as well as a decrease in revenues because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They also said a difficult job market led to their census being much lower which made for a significant revenue loss.
But Branch County voters overwhelmingly said no to a five year millage request by almost 2,900 votes that would have been used to help fund the operation of the facility.
A divided Board of Commissioners also decided last August to advance Maple Lawn $1 million. The $1 million advance would be in increments of $250,000 but Maple Lawn has not accepted any money from the county so far.
Maple Lawn Administrator Jayne Sabaitis reported to the Board of Commissioners in January how they were financially holding up. She said at the time the number of residents was up into the 80s but they were still having trouble hiring enough staff members.
