BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The National Weather Service said there was a possibility Wednesday afternoon would be filled with severe storms including possible tornadoes and perhaps a tornado outbreak. But thankfully, none of those dire weather predictions took place in Branch County or in the nearby area.
Branch County was included in a Tornado Watch that was issued at mid morning which covered the southern half of Lower Michigan, northern Indiana and northwest Ohio.
Although severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in western St. Joseph County and Calhoun County around midday mainly for wind gusts around 60 mph, no severe weather warnings were posted for Branch County and the Tornado Watch was eventually cancelled at around 1:30 p.m..
The line of severe storms that raced across the state led to a 62 mph wind gust being reported at Reynolds Field Airport in Jackson County.
The temperature dropped 14 degrees in just a few minutes at the Branch County Memorial Airport when the front went through at midday. The mercury went from 75 degrees at 11:55 a.m. to 61 degrees at 12:15 p.m. with wind gusts as high as 33 mph.
About 2,200 Consumer’s Energy customers in Calhoun County lost power. Most of the outages were between Marshall and Albion.
The only power outage reported in Branch County was between West Gower and West Girard Roads east of Burlington Road.
