BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – Bronson City Manager Brandon Mersman says the majority of citizens who spoke to the Bronson City Council on Monday night stated they were against having recreational marijuana facilities in the city.
A public hearing was held during Monday’s City Council meeting in order to seek input from the community. No action was taken by the Council afterwards.
Mersman said almost 10 audience members spoke with about eight of them expressing their opposition.
Bronson Mayor Matt Watkins requested last month that the topic be discussed. With recreation marijuana businesses now operating in Coldwater and Quincy, Watkins felt the community should be asked do we want to do this or not.
When recreational marijuana became legal in Michigan following its approval by voters in November of 2018, the Council initially decided to put a moratorium on it in order to get more information.
City Attorney Chuck Lillis provided some background information last month and advised Council members to talk to community members. He said while there was license and state tax money available, the Council members would have to decide if it was something they wanted.
In other business, the City Council honored Chuck Buckley who is retiring after working for the city at its wastewater treatment plant for 43 years.
