QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The short handed Quincy Orioles girls softball team managed to get a split of their Big 8 Conference opening doubleheader against the Reading Rangers on Tuesday night. Reading won the opener 12-9 before Quincy came back to win the nightcap 15-5 as they earned their first victory of the season.
With their senior catcher and two of their pitchers out, Quincy’s Alyssa McCavit stepped up to take on the pitching duties and freshman Makiya Feltner played huge behind the plate.
Game one saw the Orioles take a 6-2 lead after four innings but Reading rallied to take a 12-6 lead into the bottom of the 7th.
After two quick outs, McCavit came to bat and smashed her first career home run which seemed to wake up Quincy’s offense but the rally came up short.
Josie Mescher added three singles, Payton Gross hit three triples. Two hits were collected by Kaylee Modert, Kailey Allman, Deziray Skirka, and McKynna Connin.
The bats were hot right at the start of game two for the Orioles as they scored four runs in the top of the first.
Alyssa McCavit took the win in the circle. Connin had a single and blasted her first home run of the season as part of Quincy’s 18 hits.
Makiya Feltner went 3 for 3 with 2 singles and a double. Modert doubled twice and singled, Allman doubled and singled, Skirka doubled and tripled, Katie Bailey singled twice, Mescher singled and tripled while Gross singled and tripled.
