UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The search for a missing kayaker involving numerous police and fire agencies in the Union City area ended after nearly an hour on Thursday evening when the kayaker was found safe and sound.
Union City Police Chief Chris Mathis says the Coldwater man in his mid 30s got separated from his group as they were kayaking in the St. Joseph River.
He managed to get out of the river at Day Road and walked over a mile into Union City. The search for him ended when he arrived in Riverside Park and talked to a police officer.
The Union City Fire Department says they were alerted shortly after 5:30 p.m. that the kayaker was missing in the St. Joseph River by others in the group.
They then requested mutual aid from the Sherwood and Burlington Fire Departments.
They were also assisted by the Union City Police Department, the Branch County Sheriff’s Department, the Branch County Dive Team and the Michigan DNR.
The Village of Union City’s drone camera was also used in the search.
