MATTESON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A heat lamp is being listed as the cause of a fire Tuesday night in Matteson Township which caused nearly $225,000 worth of damage to a two story farmhouse.
Bronson Fire Chief Scott Wilber say firefighters from his department were dispatched 926 Wattles Road just after 7:00 p.m..
Crews found flames on the exterior and heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the farmhouse when they arrived.
Firefighters from six departments had to battle the flames. Crews from Sherwood, Colon, Union City, Burr Oak, and Athens were called for mutual aid to provide tankers and personnel.
Lifecare Ambulance also responded to provide medical standby.
Wilber says the owners, who were home at the time, were able to escape the home with their dogs prior to the fire department’s arrival.
One cat was rescued by firefighters. 60,000 gallons of water were used to stop the blaze.
Firefighters were on scene for about five hours. Damage was estimated at $175,000 to the structure and $50,000 to the contents.
