COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Organizers for Branch Pride will be hosting a “Meet and Build” on Saturday afternoon so that community members can learn more about a proposed low barrier men’s homeless shelter.
The meeting will take place at the United Methodist Church at 26 Marshall Street starting at 1:00 p.m..
Branch Pride Director Chris Boger says even as they are raising funds, the shelter’s program has been written.
It’s hoped $175,000 can be raised to pay for ownership of the building and the start up costs.
Boger says there down to two possible locations for the shelter and they hope to be open before next winter.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has gifted Branch Pride 17 beds and a nurses’ station.
According to a fund raising newsletter, the number of homeless individuals in Branch County has increased over the last couple of years. More homeless persons are being seen in parks and neighborhoods.
It’s estimated over 200 homeless persons received assistance in Branch County last year.
Also being accepted are donations of clothing, blankets, canned food and money. Checks can be sent to the Rainbow House at 42 West Chicago, Coldwater, 49036.
