COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker wants to make the public aware of what he is calling a growing situation of more persons living in a property than what is considered safe and legally permitted.
Baker says in his report for Monday night’s City Council meeting that persons are buying single family homes and then renting to a second party to make it look like it is a single-family rental.
The second party then rents the home to multiple persons for a much higher rent per person. As it turns out, Baker says owners of these properties are not registering them as rentals.
Baker reports that they know of at least five locations in the City. One had six persons in a two-bedroom home.
Another had thirteen persons but according to Baker, language barriers and training from the property owner to their tenants to not cooperate with the City is hindering inspections and enforcement.
City officials are encouraging residents that if see this type of activity to report it to the Neighborhood Services Department.
