COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The flipping of the former Gillespie Funeral Home on Marshall Street in Coldwater into a seven unit apartment dwelling that will be known “Southern Flats” is almost complete.
Economic Development Coordinator and Main Street Director Audrey Tappenden told the Coldwater Historic District Commission on Wednesday night workers are performing the final touches.
The Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $750,000 Michigan Community Revitalization Program performance-based grant in support of the project in July of 2022.
In addition, the Downtown Development Authority approved a $10,000 façade grant and a 12-year Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act tax abatement with an estimated value of over $149,000.
The property at 27 Marshall Street is owned by Southern Michigan Bank & Trust. The building which housed the former funeral home was built in 1920.
It’s estimated the entire project to rehabilitate the building and improve the surrounding property involved a total capital investment of over $1-point-8 million.
