UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Branch County and Big 8 rivals Quincy and Union City split their final conference baseball doubleheader of the season at Alumni Field Tuesday afternoon as the Orioles won the opener 7-1 before the Chargers bounced back to win the second game 5-0.
The Orioles scored all of their first game runs in the top of the sixth. Grant Holroyd, Jimmy Maynard, Riley Miner, Ryan Kempter and Brady Mescher each had RBIs in the frame.
The highlight of the game came in the last of the sixth when Quincy’s Mickey Connin snagged a line drive and fired to second for the second out and Miner tagged out the other Union City runner completing a rare triple play.
Mescher was the winning pitcher as he went the distance allowing ten hits and one run while striking out eight to earn his fifth conference victory. He also had a RBI triple.
The Chargers won the second game thanks to strong pitching. Luke Watson and Rick Austin combined on a five hitter. Watson was the winning pitcher as he went five plus innings and struck out five.
Union City was the visiting team for the second game. They scored three runs in the third inning and added single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Aidan Decker had two hits for the Chargers as they improved to 23-8 overall and finished 9-5 in the Big Eight.
The Orioles finish the 2023 Big Eight portion of their schedule with a 10-4 record. Overall, the Orioles are 17-8 and are back in action on Thursday hosting Barry County Christian in a non league doubleheader.
