COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Union City man was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on nine counts in Branch County District Court after Union City Police stopped his motorcycle when they saw he had no license plate.
According to Branch County court documents, officers had to exceed 100 miles an hour to catch up with the motorcycle driven by 48-year-old Brett Brooks.
He was eventually stopped on M-60 east of Nine Mile Road. Brooks is accused of initially resisting two Union City officers by flailing his arms and moving around but he eventually stopped and was placed in handcuffs.
A probable cause affidavit states officers found a loaded handgun, brass knuckles, ammunition and methamphetamine.
Prosecutors filed a habitual offender fourth offense notice in addition to two counts of resisting a police office. They also filed charges of meth possession, carrying a concealed weapon, being a felon in possession of a weapon, being a felon in possession of ammunition, being in possession of a dangerous weapon and fourth degree fleeing from an officer and felony firearm.
Court records show the criminal record for Brooks goes back to 1996. He has been convicted three times for felony assault with a dangerous weapon. Brooks has also been convicted for breaking and entering, fleeing from a police officer and meth possession.
Bond during his arraignment was set at $50,000 with a probable cause hearing scheduled for June 1 and a preliminary exam on June 8.
